Now that Halo 5: Guardians has gone gold, Digital Foundry has subjected the final build to its loving attentions.

According to the group’s analysis, Halo 5 maintains an almost perfect frame rate, duping frames only during loading transitions.

It does this by adjusting the game’s resolution on the fly. Full 1080p is “a bit of a rarity”, apparently, but the frame rate stays solid at 60fps thanks to this clever bit of engineering.

Making this even more impressive is the sheer amount of stuff going on in each area – loads of enemy and friendly units, background laser battles, and more. You can see that in action in the video below.

The footage does show off the start of the game, including cut-scenes, so don’t watch if you want to go in pure when Halo 5 launches for Xbox One on October 27.

Back before this generation started we all sort of imagined that every game would be 60fps on new hardware, but while the available power has gone up, so too have standards of complexity in gameplay and graphics. As a result, many games are locked at 30fps or even lower, but pack in multiplayer, beautiful visuals and new and interesting features instead. It’s cool to see Halo 5 go for both, by chucking resolution out the window instead.

It's a trap

Hype is what gives a movie its power. It is an energy created by all beloved franchises. It surrounds us and penetrates us. It binds our galaxy together. But beware the dark side of hype.

Yes, I was like you, once; fresh-faced, hopeful. Back in 1999. Before the birth of social media. Before viral videos and transmedia marketing. Before ... the dark times ...

I have lived this day. I have walked in the warm glow of a great trailer. I have seen the desert sands spread out before me, looked deeply into a distant starfield and seen only rebirth and renewal.

And I have seen it all slip through my fingers.

Many of you were there, too. Have you simply forgotten?

You must remember seeing that first one-sheet poster, long ago, of young Anakin and his ominous shadow. You must remember learning about Padme, Senator Palpatine and the Gungans for the first time.

Have you forgotten what we went through that following May, on release day? Have you forgotten the wooden performances? The hackneyed plot? The strangely racist aliens and, years later, those poor, dead Jedi children?

Have you simply forgotten Jar Jar?

Don't you remember leaving the theater that day, poisoned by nostalgia and pledging to anyone who would listen how you planned to go back for another dose as soon as you could? How we deluded ourselves, in the months and the years after The Phantom Menacecame out that it was the second coming of the franchise? How it was just as good as — maybe better than! — those other three movies made a long time ago, in a memory far far away?

Calm yourself. Let the hype flow over you, not through you, and see these past 24 hours for what they truly are.

Last night, during the weekly ritual that is Monday Night Football — when millions of football fans the world over were at their weakest and most inebriated — one of the world's most powerful media companies released upon a largely unsuspecting population a potent two-minute video designed to evoke nostalgia and good vibes.

It's a trap.

It's nothing more than hype, and it can only be described as one of the most sophisticated and calculated efforts in media history.

Why are we falling for this again?

Hype is the dark side. It seduces us. It whips us into a frenzy, while luring us into complacency. It makes us feel things we don't want to feel, and it blinds us of the truth.

The truth is we know nothing about how The Force Awakens is going to look on the screen. We know nothing other than what the Empire of Disney elects to tell us, nothing more than what we can piece together from an 18-hour marathon of product marketing.

It's not that I know the film will be bad, it's that I don't know that it will be any good.

No matter how hard we squint, we will not see The Force Awaken's potential failure coming until it is too late. And the stakes are much higher this time, for good or ill, because the original cast is involved.

Thankfully, there is another, but mark my words ...

It's not that I know the film will be bad, it's that I don't know that it will be any good.

The trailer for The Phantom Menace ranks among the best in a long line of great Star Wars trailers, but it's also a master class in marketing. Could it be the film industry has gotten even better at making trailers since then?

I hope that the new team behind the franchise is better than the last, but I won't get suckered again this time. At the end of the day, the only thing I wish for more than the strength to admit The Force Awakens is a failure is that I never have to.

The recently-teased redesign of the Google Play Store sure looks nice, and now it's starting to arrive on devices. The new design will immediately catch your eye as it's a pretty sizable departure from the last design, with prominent tabs in the main interface for "Apps & Games" and then "Entertainment."

Entertainment of course has sub-sections for Movies & TV, Music, Books and Newsstand, while the Apps & Games tab has separate sections for top charts, games, categories, family and editors' choice. The new pill-shaped buttons are a theme throughout the new app, used in place of the scrolling tabs in use before.

Rainbow Six Siege is the latest tactical shooter in the Tom Clancy universe. Some of Ubisoft's attempts to stage a comeback for the series didn't work out too well, as neither Rainbow 6 Vegas nor Rainbox 6 Vegas 2 were very well received on the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. With Rainbow 6 Siege though, Ubisoft seems to have finally found the right formula for the series.

The last two Rainbow Six featured a single-player campaign, and Rainbow Six Siege is no different. However, this time around the focus is on multiplayer. Our preview at Gamescom 2015 had us squaring off other game journalists in five on five combat. Much like Team Fortress 2 and Battlefield 4, here too you choose your character class at the start of the match. While we had around 10 classes to choose from, the final game will have 20. Different classes have different powers, such as the ability to wield special weapons such as sledge hammers to breach doors, or electronic jammers to keep your foes at bay.

All of these class types and gizmos come in handy. And at times picking the right class is as important as having great reflexes. Matches in Rainbow Six Siege don't just have you gunning down the opposition (granted that's the most gratifying part of it) so choosing the correct class in relation to the rest of your team makes all the difference on some maps.

Our gameplay session had us defending a base against a team of human controlled attackers. There a brief preparation period that allowed us to set up defences, such as barricading rooms and laying down barbed wire. In the meantime our opposition scanned the environment looking for our location.

When the match started it was a tense, drawn out affair. Aiming and shooting felt precise. Movement was on the slower side, which is expected given the strategic nature of gameplay. If you were expecting a Call of Duty or Battlefield replacement, then think again because Rainbow Six Siege is a completely different beast. Camping (standing behind cover, waiting for your opponents to drop in) isn't a viable strategy either thanks to destructible environments. Provided your aim is true, one shot usually equates with one kill.

All of this culminates in a sense of vulnerability where you're compelled to communicate with your team mates in order to survive. We found ourselves chatting to our fellow squad members more often than not, prior to and during the three rounds we played to check who was using which class (so there would be no overlap), who had what items left (so they could be allocated in the necessary sections of the map), and of course, call in for backup. Towards the end of a frantic assault by our opposition it came in handy, calling in backup and requesting explosives that saved us the match.

While other games provide opportunities and mechanics such as class based systems and an emphasis on team work, the inherent fragility when playing Rainbow Six Siege's multiplayer mode pushed us and our team members to talk to each other. A rare occurrence considering that most multiplayer shooters are either expletive-laden affairs or gigantic chasms of silence punctuated by gun fire.

With a pre-order beta scheduled for September 24 and the game slated to hit on October 13, Rainbow Six Siege is looking to be a surprisingly competent multiplayer shooter. Wether the single-player campaign manages to match up remains to be seen, but if you're the sort looking for something to play with your friends, Ubisoft have conjured up what appears to be a viable option.

Another year, another FIFA game. And while the PC and console versions have been annual staples for many a gamer, Electronic Arts (EA) hasn't forgotten about smartphone and tablet owners. The latest in its attempt at small screen dominance sees EA Sports FIFA hitting Android and iOS devices on September 22. The date coincides with the American release of the game on PC and consoles.

EA Sports FIFA for smartphones and tablets - which will be free to download and play - features console-like graphics, enhanced AI, and all the bells and whistles you've come to expect from the franchise with a yearly release in order to keep things relevant. The mobile version of the game also finally get player goal celebrations, and new control options for smoother gameplay.

But what's most telling is the ability for gamers to exchange players. It's a new feature that lets you get the players you want. Rather than sell or discard unwanted players, you can exchange them for random new ones. The better the player exchanged, the higher chance of getting a better rated one in return.

Also the game's popular Ultimate Team mode has undergone a few important changes, the most crucial of which ensures that you won't have to start over with your Ultimate Team from scratch. With regular updates and events, you can keep your existing players and keep playing.

While all these changes sound good on paper we're curious to see how they're received by the game's rabid fanbase when it hits on September 22.

It hasn't even been a month since the release of Windows 10 and Microsoft's newest desktop operating system has been stirring up one privacy related controversy after another. The latest addition is company's rather bold decision to change the license agreement, giving it the power to disable counterfeit games and unathorised hardware on computers running Windows 10.

The Redmond-based software mammoth has updated its European License Agreement ToC (first spotted by PC Authority) to note that it will not tolerate counterfeit games or hardware on any Windows 10-powered machine.

The company "may automatically check your version of the software and download software update or configuration changes, including those that prevent you from accessing the Services, playing counterfeit games, or using unauthorised hardware peripheral devices," the 7(b) clause of the revised EULA reads.

While the specifics are largely unclear, the statement suggests that Microsoft is taking a big stand against the usage of illegally obtained games, an ill practice that is significantly reducing the revenue of PC game developers alike. Whether this also extends to non-games applications, well the license explictly says games (for now), so probably not. Why Microsoft is differentiating between illegally obtained games and other apps is anyone's guess.

When contacted for details, a Microsoft spokesperson offered nothing more than a boilerplate statement. "We take claims of intellectual property infringement seriously and review them in accordance with our standard procedures. We also continue to review the content of our Windows Store periodically as described in this blog post, as we work to deliver a great customer experience and provide fair and transparent developer policies and enforcement."

It is unclear how exactly the company detects "counterfeit games" on a Windows 10 machine.

Within days of release, Windows 10 was criticised for its stand on privacy, with features like Wi-Fi sense and Cortana, amongst others, taking the blame. Since then the OS has been embrioled in one privacy related controversy after another.

Nicki Minaj is getting her own video game

More and more celebrities launch their own mobile video game. For example, Meek Mill, Kim Kardashian, and Snoop Dogg already have their own video game. Nevertheless, they will have a strong new challenger, as the female rapper Nicki Minaj is getting her own mobile game!

There are no details about her game but we know that it will be developed by Glu, a publisher of mobile games for smartphone and tablet devices. The company is allegedly also working with Britney Spears, Katy Perry, Kendall and Kylie Jenner, and Jason Statham.

Nicki’s game is expected to be released in mid-2016.

The Burning Legion is back in the next expansion for World of Warcraft, which will raise the level cap to 110 and add a new hero class, Demon Hunter, to the longrunning MMORPG. It’s called World of Warcraft: Legion, and it’s packed full of Warcraft lore from obvious to archaic.

At a live presentation at Gamescom in Germany today, Blizzard showed off the new expansion pack, first with a teaser. That guy with the hood is Gul’dan, an orc shaman with a whole lot of history in the realm of Warcraft.

After the teaser, Blizzard played this sizzle reel, officially announcing World of Warcraft: Legion and showing off some of the expansion pack’s new features:

During a stage presentation after showing off these videos, Blizzard went on to elaborate more about what WoW players will see and do in Legion.

For starters, before the new expansion even launches, Blizzard says players will have to face hordes of demons in a zone called the Tomb of Sargeras, which will be a familiar name to anyone who’s familiar with Warcraft lore. Dalaran will be back as the main player city hub, and Blizzard is finally letting players go to the Emerald Nightmare, a corrupted section of the game’s Emerald Dream.

Legion will introduce a new area called The Broken Isles:

Alleria and Turalyon are coming back, too, Blizzard says. New artifacts in the expansion pack include Ashbringer and Doomhammer. They’re really going all out with lore for this one.

The official Legion website also went live this afternoon, if you want a full blowout on the new pack’s characters and features. In addition to all the features and lore they mentioned during today’s presentation, Blizzard is offering class-specific order halls and followers, a level-100 character boost, and a totally overhauled PVP progression system.

No word on release date yet, but there’ll be a beta this year.

Way of the Samurai 4 takes place in the humble port town of Amihama during the mid 19th Century, several years after the arrival of the “black ships” from the West ended Japan’s long history of cultural isolation.

The Way of the Samurai series is widely renowned for allowing players to make far-reaching decisions that can radically alter the course of the story and this, the fourth entry in this thrilling series and previously exclusive to the PS3, is no exception! Now all the sword wielding action, adventure and drama of the Way of the Samurai series comes to PC for the very first time, continuing the series’ blend of customization, exploration, action gameplay and quirky humour.

Deadpool is back on Steam!

There are a few important things I need to say before you crack into my insanely sweet game. (Oof. Here we go again.) I'm a mercenary with an accelerated healing factor. I've been described as unstable, which is just plain coo-coo. (Wait, do sane people say coo-coo?) I'm gonna battle for the safety of humans and mutants. (And even mumans.) Be prepared for just about anything. (Holla!)

Nintendo of Japan issued a statement on Sunday confirming the death of longtime company President Satoru Iwata on Saturday.

The brief statement, which was also posted at Nintendo's Japanese Twitter account, simply stated that the 55-year-old passed away "due to a bile duct growth." Neither the company nor Iwata had spoken about his health issues since the president was forced to skip the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2014; as Kotaku reported last year, Iwata himself eventually responded to fans' concerns about his apparent worsening appearance, telling them he was "progressing well."

Iwata had been a member of the Nintendo development community since joining the company's subsidiary game studio HAL Laboratory in the early '80s, where he worked on such famous franchises as Kirby, Earthbound, and Balloon Fight. In 2002, he succeeded Hiroshi Yamauchi, the company's president during its rise as a video game company. Iwata successfully guided the company into its incredible Wii era. In more recent years, he responded to concerns over disappointing Wii U sales by taking a salary cut.

Well, my interest level in Batman: Arkham Knight just skyrocketed. Fresh details on the DLC coming in the game’s season pass reveal Batgirl’s Arkham game debut.

While Rocksteady’s Arkham trilogy comes to a close with the release of Arkham Knight in June, the developer has a packed schedule of side stories and additional content to keep batfans happy long after the credits roll. Tops on that list for at least two Kotaku editors is the “Batgirl: A Matter of Family” downloadable story expansion, featuring an entirely new location and starring a playable Batgirl.

I keep wanting to call her Barbara or Babs, but I’m not so sure the shinier, happier member of the Bat family that Evan Narcisse wanted is what we’re getting.

For one, we know that Oracle plays a strong role in Arkham Knight, and Oracle is Barbara Gordon in a wheelchair.

Since this is a side story removed from the main narrative, it could be tale of Batgirl’s past, before whatever events in this universe led to her injury (did “The Killing Joke” happen here?). Or maybe it’s another Batgirl entirely.

My interested in Batgirl kicked into high gear in the late ‘90s/early 2000s, when a mute assassin named Cassandra Cain was taken under Batman’s wing after acting as one of Oracle’s operatives during the “No Man’s Land” comic storyline. Originally devoid of speech but able to read body movements at a supernatural level, Cassandra got over the whole speech thing and eventually wound up as Black Bat, Batman Incorporated’s Hong Kong operative.

I loved this character from the moment I first saw her on a comic book cover, cloth stitched over her suit’s mouth. Her initial wordless run was brilliant.

“A Matter of Family” could very well allude to a Barbara Gordon story. Or it could have something to do with Cassandra Cain and her assassin father David Cain or her murderous mother Lady Shiva.

I’ll keep my fingers crossed. In the meantime, here’s the rest of the Season Pass details revealed in the Arkham Knight forums (via Greg Miller’s Twitter).
The Season of Infamy — Play as Batman in all new story missions featuring legendary super-villains invading Gotham City, with new story arcs, missions and gameplay features.

Gotham City Stories — Play as Batman’s key allies in narrative missions extending their storylines, from both before and after the events in Batman: Arkham Knight.

Legendary Batmobiles with Themed Tracks — Drive the most iconic Batmobiles from Batman’s 75-year history, on custom-built race tracks, each themed to that Batmobile’s specific era. Every Batmobile will be drivable across every race track.

Crimefighter Challenge Maps — Engage in a series of new challenge maps utilizing the unique play styles of Batman and his allies.

Character Skins — A variety of skins from across the eras for Batman, Robin, Nightwing and Catwoman.

Looks like Square Enix's new Deus Ex game, the sequel to 2011's Deus Ex: Human Revolution, has leaked early. According to a cached version of Russian website Kanobu, the next entry in the series is called Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and is bound for PlayStation 4, Windows PC and Xbox One.

According to Kanobu's report, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will see the return of Adam Jensen, who will be outfitted with new augmentations and have access to new technology. A handful of screenshots purportedly from the game — some look like concept art and composites of previously released images of the new Deus Ex engine — show off howMankind Divided will look on current generation platforms.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided appears to be a first-person stealth-adventure game with third-person cover elements, and it looks like Jensen will have robust customization options for his weapons.

Square Enix is currently in the midst of a three-day promotional event being broadcast through Twitch. The game, from one of the company's Western studios, is widely speculated to be the new Deus Ex title. Square Enix filed a trademark application for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 2014.

We've contacted Square Enix for confirmation on details.

Update:

The new issues of Game Informer magazine confirms details on Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, reporting that the game is set two years after the events of Human Revolution. Jensen will be part of an Interpol-backed team that hunts down augmented terrorists. Square Enix tweeted that an official reveal is set for April 8, at 9 a.m. PT.

Early last month, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm Studio teased a mobile version of Mortal Kombat to launch alongside the next iteration of the venerable fighting game franchise on console and PC, and as of just a few moments ago we noticed that Mortal Kombat X [Free] is actually already available in the App Store. Well… sort of. While it's showing up in the App Store, a couple of of us here have had trouble actually downloading the game, though Carter seemed to get his working. Go Carter! Your mileage may vary, but it's likely just a weird App Store SNAFU. Something similar happened with the launch of DuckTales last week but it was a temporary thing.

Problems aside, MORTAL KOMBAT ON MOBILE YA'LL! I'm so freaking excited to finally get my hands on this bad boy again. I say again because I actually played an early version ofMortal Kombat X at GDC this year, and liked what I saw very much. I'm a huge Injustice[Free] and Immortals [Free] fan, and Mortal Kombat X on mobile is along those same lines but better in pretty much every way. So hit up the download link below and let us know if you're able to actually download the game yet or not, and be sure to check out early impressions in our forums.

No need to act surprised, but there's almost certainly gonna be a new Call of Duty game this year. That's not news per se because for all I know, the apocalypse will arrive tomorrow (hopefully after breakfast!), but there's little doubt that the world's most reliable franchise will arrive again this November. The big question is: what sub-brand will it be? Modern Warfare? Advanced Warfare? Ghosts? A return to World War 2?

It looks like we'll see a return to the Black Ops series, if new viral marketing evidence is anything to go by. Activision has sprinkled Snapchat links throughout Black Ops 2 during a recent update, according to the above video by YouTuber Drift0r. The Snapchat link – which works like a QR code – links to the official Call of Duty Snapchat account which suggests that maybe, just maybe, we'll get an announcement via that social media platform at some point in the future. Could it be true?

It makes sense: Black Ops studio Treyarch is developing Call of Duty in 2015. The big question, after ten years of annual Call of Duty games, is whether it will feature an actual dog. That'd be cool. Perhaps a German Shepherd, with realistic fur. Wouldn't that be something.

Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider, the 2013 reboot of the action adventure series, has sold more than 8.5 million copies, publisher Square Enix announced today, more than any other game in the franchise's history.

Sales of Tomb Raider include the original versions for Mac, PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360, and the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition re-release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Square Enix said it's sold more than 40 million Tomb Raider games since the series launched in 1996 on DOS, PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

Despite also setting day-one and first-month sales records for the series, Square Enix previously sounded disappointed in Tomb Raider's commercial performance. The publisher cited Tomb Raider when discussing "weak sales of big console titles" in North America and Europe in early 2013, and said that "despite the high critical acclaim" forSleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider, those titles failed to meet their sales targets (PDF).

The following year, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics sounded more positive about Tomb Raider, after it sold more than 6 million copies sold worldwide.

A new game in the series, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is coming exclusively to Xbox platforms, though that console exclusivity is for a limited time.

The Smart Boy started off as what seemed like an April Fools' Day prank, but it looks like Hyperkin actually plans to make a device for the iPhone 6 Plus that turns it into a fully functional Game Boy.

Here's a mockup of what the Smart Boy might look like when it hits the market.Hyperkin

Remember the good old days of gaming with the original Nintendo Game Boy? I poured countless hours into the handheld gaming platform playing games like The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong and Metal Gear Solid as a kid, and now I and everyone else might be able to relive those glory days with the Smart Boy from video game accessory maker Hyperkin.

The Smart Boy is a smartphone case of sorts that connects to the iPhone 6 Plus and makes it possible to play Game Boy games on it. To play the games, however, you'll need to actually own the cartridges, so you'll either need to have some Game Boy games on hand or head over to eBay or your local thrift store to buy your games of choice.

Initially revealed by Hyperkin as a sort-of April Fools' Day prankposted to its Facebook page on March 31, Hyperkin has since revealed that the Smart Boy teaser post was actually a way to gauge interest in such a product to see if it was worth making. Apparently there was significant interest in such a product, as now the company plans to put the iPhone 6 Plus model into production, with variants for other smartphones to come shortly thereafter.

The only question left to ask is, are you ready, Player One?

FIFA 15: Lionel Messi Announced for Cover of New Video Game

David Ramos/Getty Images

Lionel Messi might have lost the 2014 World Cup, but being on the cover of one of the most popular sports video game franchises in the world is

comparable, right? The Argentine star was announced as the FIFA 15 cover athlete on Monday, per the game's official Twitter account:

The 27-year-old is fresh off a World Cup in which he helped Argentina reach the final and won the Golden Ball:
View image on Twitter

As usual, EA Sports will have different covers for a few different regions across the globe, but Messi will feature prominently on every separate edition. According to IGN's Evan Campbell, this is the third year in a row in the FIFA series in which the Barcelona attacker has earned the honor. Messi was also on the cover of FIFA Street.
View image on Twitter
The FIFA series has generally been hailed by fans year in and year out as one of the best sports games on the market, so it's of course appropriate that the cover boy is one of the best players in the world. Having Messi on the cover is essentially a statement from the game's developers that they believe nobody can touch their product.

Some of the new features for this year's edition include "Emotional Intelligence," which means players will be reacting to in-match events in real time, and "Living Pitch," which will show pitch degradation and grass/mud stains on player's uniforms.

A major overhaul isn't completely necessary considering the quality ofFIFA 14, so a few tweaks here and there should keep the franchise going strong.

FIFA 15 will be released on all major platforms on September 23 in North America and September 25 in Europe
