Crystal Dynamics' Tomb Raider, the 2013 reboot of the action adventure series, has sold more than 8.5 million copies, publisher Square Enix announced today, more than any other game in the franchise's history.

Sales of Tomb Raider include the original versions for Mac, PlayStation 3, Windows PC and Xbox 360, and the Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition re-release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Square Enix said it's sold more than 40 million Tomb Raider games since the series launched in 1996 on DOS, PlayStation and Sega Saturn.

Despite also setting day-one and first-month sales records for the series, Square Enix previously sounded disappointed in Tomb Raider's commercial performance. The publisher cited Tomb Raider when discussing "weak sales of big console titles" in North America and Europe in early 2013, and said that "despite the high critical acclaim" forSleeping Dogs, Hitman: Absolution and Tomb Raider, those titles failed to meet their sales targets (PDF).

The following year, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics sounded more positive about Tomb Raider, after it sold more than 6 million copies sold worldwide.

A new game in the series, Rise of the Tomb Raider, is coming exclusively to Xbox platforms, though that console exclusivity is for a limited time.
