Sewage Plant Threatens Iponri Residents

About half-a-million residents of Surulere are reportedly at the risk of a looming epidemic, expect the state government finds a quick solution to a threatening environmental problem.

Vanguard newspaper reports that, no fewer than 500,000 residents of Iponri Low-Cost Housing Estate, Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos State, on Sunday appealed to the Lagos State Government to save their lives from epidemic that was looming there.

The sewage plant that usually drains dirty water from the soak-away of more than 400 housing units with 500,000 residents had been disconnected by Eko Disco (EKEDC) due to unpaid bills.

They said that the non-functioning of the sewage plant had resulted into flooding of the estate by dirty water from the soak away, thus spreading stench odour in the area.

Mr Abdul-Rasak Osho, President, Iponri Housing Estate Residents’ Association, told NAN that the sewage plant constructed by the Lagos State Government was being maintained by the Ministry of the Environment.

“The residents noticed that the sewage plant stopped working about three months ago. We met the engineer-in-charge who told us that the power supply to the plant had been disconnected because LASG owed the EKEDC.

“We bought diesel for them to power the plant but it was exhausted within just five hours. We have appealed to EKEDC to restore the power supply but it said not until the Lagos State Government must have paid what it owed the company.

‘The sewage plant has been under the government care since we bought flats in this estate and government has not told us that it can no longer maintain it.

“Presently, the dirty water has flooded everywhere in the estate. We cannot even pass some routes now because of the flood,” he said.

Osho appealed to the state government to offset the bill so that EKEDC would restore power supply to the sewage plant and safe the estate from the impending epidemic.

Mr Francis Odukoya, the Secretary-General of the association, said that the association had written several letters to the state Ministry of the Environment on the problem.

However, the state government had not replied to any of our correspondence.

“We have written about four letters to the Honourable Commissioner for the Environment as I am speaking to you now.

“They built the sewage plant for the estate and they have been servicing it for us for more than 30 years now, they should not relent on their efforts.

“They should come to our rescue before the residents of the estate start to contact disease because this odour is terrible,” he said.

Mrs Alake Oshodi, an old widow, living in Flat 103 in the estate, told NAN that one of her granddaughters developed illness recently and had been admitted to a private hospital.

“I’m sure the illness was as a result of this dirty water and bad odour in the estate, the government should help us before we all contact cholera,” she cried.

Correspondent could not speak with the engineer in charge of the sewage plant because the main entrance to the place was locked.

Also, none of the officials of the Ministry of the Environment was ready to speak on the issue.

They said they were not permitted to speak to the press.

Explosion Rocks Lagos

A gas explosion on Sunday afternoon occurred at a popular area in Oworonshoki, leaving many residents injured.

Although some residents claimed four persons were killed in the explosion, we cannot independently confirm if anybody died in the accident, but we can tell you that those who were injured have been rushed to Afolabi Hospital for treatment.

The incident which happened at L&K road started from a gas cylinder shop situated around a brothel in the area.

Mother Teresa to Be Made a Saint, Report Says

Pope Francis has paved the way for Mother Teresa, the Nobel Prize winning Catholic missionary, to become a saint, according to a new report.

Avvenire, an Italian Catholic daily newspaper, reported that the Pope had credited the late Mother Teresa on Thursday with performing a second—the curing of a Brazilian man of a deadly brain disease after members of the man’s family prayed to Teresa, according to Reuters.

Pope Francis attributed the second miracle to intercession with God, according to the paper, which Reuters reports is required for canonization. Francis is likely to hold a canonization ceremony for Teresa in September, Avvenire reports.

Mother Teresa had previously been beatified in 2003 by Pope John Paul II for performing one miracle; a recognition of one’s entrance into heaven that proceeds sainthood. Two miracles are a requirement for canonization.

The Vatican has not confirmed the miracle’s recognition and has no comment on the report. According to Catholic America magazine, the Church will likely announce the second miracle in the coming days.

A new hydrogel-based condom that contains antioxidants has been invented by a team of Indian-American scientists at the Texas A&M University Health Science Center. Not only does it contain plant-based antioxidants, which kills the HIV-virus in case of condom breakage but it also uses antioxidants to enhance pleasure. Experts say it is the new big player to join the fight against AIDS

"We are not only making a novel material for condoms to prevent the HIV infection, but we are also aiming to eradicate this infection if possible. Supercondom could help fight against HIV infection and may as well prevent unwanted pregnancy or sexually transmitted diseases. If we succeed, it will revolutionize the HIV prevention initiative"Choudhury, the lead researcher and assistant professor at the Texas A&M Health Science Center's Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy, said The researchers hope to test the condom within the next six months and then get it released for general usage.

Drones Must Now Be Registered

Many commercial drones, including those purchased over the holidays, must now be registered. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, starting February 19, all drones weighing between 0.55 to 50 pounds must be registered with their owners' names and addresses in a national database. Violators can face civil penalties of up to $27,500 and three years in jail.

Though people won't be able to look up users by name, they will be able to identify names and addresses from the drone's ID. The New York Times reports that disclosures are "meant to nudge users to be more responsible."

“Unmanned aircraft enthusiasts are aviators, and with that title comes a great deal of responsibility,” said Secretary of the Transportation Department Anthony Foxx.
A Helping Hand For Investigations

These new regulations are a response to a rash of public incidences with drones, such ascrashes at sporting events or those flying dangerously close to commercial airliners. Previously, it was difficult to identify the operator of a recovered drone when it endangered the public. This new database will make investigations much easier (even those conducted by neighbors).

Earlier this year when regulations were first announced, industry insiders expressed skepticism around a database.

"A national registry has serious implications for privacy," said Vice President of the Information Technology & Innovation Foundation Daniel Castro. "Journalists may want to use drone photography to investigate government or industry corruption, or citizen journalists may want to use drones as part of a protest. Rules should be written so that some legitimate anonymous actions are still protected where possible."

According to a FAA press release, the registration "does not yet support registration of small UAS [unmanned aircraft systems] used for any purpose other than hobby or recreation—for example, using an unmanned aircraft in connection with a business." Other exemptions or regulations are in the works. But, for now, if you're selling, buying, or getting a toy drone for the holidays, be sure to be aware of the new rules.

Ajao estate okada riders face off with police

Last night Ajao estate was a war zone between the commercial motorcycle riders a.k.a okada riders against the ajao estate police task force.

It was a regular evening yesterday, 10/28/2015 ,with the regular traffic from asa afariogun all the way to canoe bridge heading to oke afa ejigbo, when the shooting started,

Sources told chuckysblog that there was a raid on the okada riders by the ajao estate police task force seizing thier okada's , which resulted in the group picking up bottles, sticks, and various weapons which was used in fighting back at the police officers, Police vehicles where destroyed in the process which made the officers shoot into the air to scare them off,

This morning the streets of ajao estate was okada free the regular morning traffic from canoe to ajao junction was no more...

this made me come up with two suggestions

1.alternate routes have been taken

2.okada riders are the cause of the traffic

J.K. Rowling’s New Harry Potter Play Will Pick Up Where Seventh Book Left Off

Harry Potter fans have been speculating about what a new stage story about the wizarding world might be about, and now they have some answers: the new play from J.K. Rowling will feature an adult Harry Potter and his son, Albus Severus Potter.

The plot will pick up where the books left off, 19 years after the battle with Voldemort—Rowling describes Harry Potter and the Cursed Child as “the eighth story in the series” on her Facebook page. According to a description on the show’s website, the plot will depict Harry as “an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.”

“While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs,” the description continues, “his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

The play will run in two parts, which theatergoers can see on the same or separate days. The show opens at the Palace Theatre in London on July 30, and tickets will go on sale Wednesday. Accio seats!

Hurricane Patricia threatens Mexico as one of strongest storms ever

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico (Reuters) - Hurricane Patricia strengthened into one of the most powerful storms in history on Friday as it barreled toward Mexico's Pacific Coast, forcing resort hotels to evacuate tourists and residents to stockpile supplies.

Supergirl is a character freighted with meaning, and her appearance in a network-TV series in 2015 feels auspicious. She arrives months before DC’s Wonder Woman can make her first appearance in a major motion picture (next summer’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), one month before Netflix's Jessica Jones, and a full ten years into an almost entirely male-dominated cycle of superhero films that have generated billions of dollars in box-office revenue but only one significant female character (Marvel’s Black Widow, who has yet to land her own movie despite being a scene-stealing supporting character in several others). All that the show’s star, Glee’s Melissa Benoist, has to do to make a statement is show up onscreen in the heroine’s red, yellow, and blue outfit. ButSupergirl goes further. It’s a very sweet, likable series, temperamentally opposed to the preferred superhero template of pumped-up guys with T-square jaws brooding in the rain. But it would be wrong to describe it as fluff or light entertainment. It’s about what it’s about, but it’s also about what it represents. It’s a series that’s in conversation with all the superhero entertainment that preceded it, and it speaks insistently and clearly to make absolutely sure that it’s being heard.

From the minute we hear the voice of transplanted Krytponian Kara Zor-El, a.k.a. Kara Danvers, narrating the story, we’re primed to think of the show in terms of voices being heard, images being claimed and reclaimed. Although its four credited “developers” (one of whom is Greg Berlanti of the CW’s Arrow and The Flash) might be horrified to hear the show described this way, because the word is a kiss of death for some (mostly male) viewers, this is a feminist series that’s aware of the cultural and political implications of everything it’s showing us, whether it’s Kara taking issue with a prototype of a costume with a bared midriff or defeating a brawny, hateful, openly sexist foe by, essentially, destroying his symbolic phallus.

Kara was sent to Earth as a baby to watch over her younger cousin, the future Superman, but got waylaid and ended up landing on Earth years after the boy’s arrival. Now she’s trying to find her own way. She leaves her adoptive parents (played by Dean Cain and Helen Slater, who respectively played Superman on TV and Supergirl in a movie) and gets a job at a big-city newspaper run by media mogul Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), a petite human steamroller who says things like, “It’s not that I don’t see your frown, it’s that I don’t care enough to ask why it’s there.” Kara dons a costume and tries out her powers for the first time in the pilot episode, learns some secrets about her past, learns that she has a mission; we meet supporting characters familiar from prior incarnations of the story, including a bad guy who is essentially an openly sexist version of General Zod named Vartox (Owain Yeoman), and the newspaper photographer James Olsen (here played by Mehcad Brooks, certainly the most broad-shouldered, deep-voiced, confident “Jimmy” of all time).

All the usual origin-story beats are here, and at first it seems a little bit sad, or perhaps just irritating, that so much of it is just recycling the story of Superman but with a woman (all this is inherited, by the way; it’s from the comics). But soon it becomes clear that Supergirl is dealing in a couple of related subtexts. One is the difficulty of a woman establishing herself as noteworthy and valuable when a man has already done all of the things she’s capable of doing and been acclaimed for them (the ho-hum factor). The other is how hard it is to get the public (represented here by the newspaper’s readers) to think of Kara as the equal of any male superhero when even her allies seem to denigrate her, even though they don't mean to.

“I don’t want to minimize the importance of this,” Kara says, the morning after the superheroine rescues an endangered airplane and makes headlines around the world and is dubbed “Supergirl” by Cat. “A female superhero. Shouldn’t she be called Superwoman? If we call her Supergirl, something less than what she is, doesn’t it make us guilty of being antifeminist?” Cat asks her, “What do you think is so bad about ‘girl’? If you perceive ‘Supergirl’ as anything less than excellent, isn’t the real problem you?”

Well, not necessarily — but it's still nice to hear these kinds of conversations occurring on a CBS series, especially one filled with so many iconic comic-book images and situations. It’s a gauntlet rather brazenly thrown down to sexist fanboys — many of whom will refuse to watch this series because it’s about a young woman who cries sometimes and still misses her dead mother and is still learning how to be a superhero, though of course they’ll say it’s for some other reason. The deliberate echoing of the original 1978 Superman: The Movie — which also let the protagonist make headlines by saving an endangered airliner and had the bad guy demand a face-to-face meeting via high-frequency transmissions that only superheroes and animals can hear — feels like an especially pointed sort of provocation. It’s like the show is flat-out saying, “Here is, literally, the story of Superman — but with a woman. If you are automatically not interested, ask yourself why that is.”

I don’t want to come across as unreasonably enthused about Supergirlbecause CBS only saw fit to send out the pilot. There could be a precipitous drop in quality in the next few weeks, for all we know. But what’s onscreen here is intelligent, sensitive, and sure-footed, and altogether promising. The show knows what it’s doing and what it’s about.

Turing Pharmaceuticals, a months-old biotech startup that is largely financed by its 32-year-old founder and CEO Martin Shkreli, sparked widespread outrage last month. The reason: shortly after paying $55 million for a 62-year-old drug called Daraprim that’s prescribed for toxoplasmosis and other types of infections, Turing repriced the drug from $13.50 per pill to a stunning $750 per pill.

Shkreli was wholly unapologetic about the move, too, tweeting, when asked how he was able to sleep at night, that he uses Ambien. We’d covered his somewhat stunning reaction to critics here.

Now, Shkreli — a former hedge fund manager who was ousted from his last company, Retrophin — is seemingly about to get a taste of his own medicine. Yesterday, Imprimis Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded, San Diego-based specialty pharmaceutical company, announced that it has created a customizable alternative to Daraprim that costs roughly $1 per pill.

“While we respect Turing’s right to charge patients and insurance companies whatever it believes is appropriate, there may be more cost-effective compounded options for medications, such as Daraprim, for patients, physicians, insurance companies and pharmacy benefit managers to consider,” the company said in its statement.

Imprimis’ new compound is a combination of pyrimethamine along with another generic drug called leucovorin, a form of folic acid. It isn’t FDA-approved, though its specific ingredients are FDA-approved. As a result, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune, it can be sold through a doctor’s prescription to a specific individual.

Shkreli had founded Turing earlier this year, closing a $90 million Series A round in August that he reportedly led himself. It also included several other unnamed “preeminent institutional equity investors,” according to a statement.

Turing also took on some senior secured debt, which is unusual and may explain why it was eager to alter the pricing of Daraprim.

After coming under fire from critics, Shkreli told ABC News last month that, “We’ve agreed to lower the price of Daraprim to a point that is more affordable and is able to allow the company to make a profit, but a very small profit.”

As of two weeks ago, that still had not happened.

In the meantime, Turing posted an announcement earlier today, saying the FDA has cleared the way for the clinical trial of another of its drugs, one that treats epileptic encephalopathies

20th Century Fox has set a Summer 2017 release date for Kingsman 2

Earlier this year, Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of the Mark Millar/Dave Gibbons graphic novel Kingsman: The Secret Service became a surprise hit for 20th Century Fox, grossing $128 million domestically and another $285 million overseas. It also kicked off what would be a year filled with spy thrillers and comedies.

It wasn’t long before a sequel was confirmed with Vaughn thinking of directing it himself, and now we’ve learned that 20th Century Fox isn’t going to wait that long to release a sequel, setting a June 16, 2017 release date for the spy action-comedy that will presumably bring back Taron Egerton’s now fully-trained secret agent.

While there’s no word who else might return from the first movie–if you’ve seen it then you know why it will be hard to bring many characters back, kind of like with another Millar-adapted movie Wanted–it would be the second movie based on one of Millar’s works to get a sequel after Kick-Ass 2, which Vaughn did not return to direct. So far, there hasn’t been any word whether Milllar and Gibbons might continue their story into another “The Secret Service” graphic novel (as Millar did with Kick-Ass) although Vaughn’s movie already diverged away from the comic, so it could theoretically continue on its own trajectory.

So far, the only other movie that has scheduled itself on that June 16, 2017 date is Disney•Pixar’s Cars 3, which shouldn’t have too much cross-over audience with the R-rated action-comedy.
