Michael Phelps was arrested for drunken driving early on Tuesday after speeding and then crossing the double-lane lines inside the Fort McHenry Tunnel in Baltimore.
The Olympic swimming champion was clocked by radar at around 1.40am travelling at 84mph in a 45mph zone, police said. The 18-times Olympic gold medalist was booked and released.
Police said the 29-year-old was “unable to perform satisfactorily a series of standard field sobriety tests,” adding he was cooperative “throughout the process”.
Phelps issued an apology via his Twitter account on Tuesday.
“Earlier this morning, I was arrested and charged with DUI, excessive speeding and crossing double lane lines,” he wrote.
“I understand the severity of my actions and take full responsibility. I know these words may not mean much right now but I am deeply sorry to everyone I have let down.”

The swimmer has been charged with drunk driving before. In November 2004, he was stopped in Salisbury, Maryland, after failing to stop for a stop sign. Phelps pleaded guilty to driving while impaired and was fined $250 and ordered to serve 18 months probation.
