Every year, we reflect on the moments that made us laugh, smile from ear to ear, or stay gripped to our screens in our annual Year in Search. In 2014, we were struck by the death of a beloved comedian, and watched news unfold about a horrific plane crash and a terrifying disease. We were captivated by the beautiful game, and had fun with birds, a bucket of ice, and a frozen princess.

Watch  video to rediscover the events, people and topics that defined 2014:

Wishing the genie goodbye
“You're only given a little spark of madness. You mustn't lose it.” The passing of beloved comedian and actor Robin Williams shook the world, bringing many people online to search for more information and to remember—and putting Williams in the #1 spot on our global trends charts. There was even an uptick in searches related to depression tests and mental health in the days following his death. We revisited his iconic roles in movies likeAladdin and Dead Poets Society and found solace in gifs and memes that captured Williams’ spirit.

All the world’s a stage
Nothing brings people together like sports, and 2014 had one of the biggest athletic events in recent memory. The World Cup in Brazil had its fair share of unforgettable moments and had everyone glued to their TVs and mobile devices all summer. From Luis Suarez’s bite heard around the world, to Tim Howard's superman performance vs. Belgium, to Germany’s incredible run to their fourth title, the competition certainly lived up to its reputation and topped the charts.

While sports brought people together, so did a good cause. This year, awareness for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, reached an all-time high around the world due to the viral ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. As celebrities and everyday people alike braved a bucket of ice cold water for a cause, donations to help find a cure for the illness hit almost $100 million.

Into the unknown
How could a plane just vanish into thin air? In the wake of the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, that question propelled the mystery to the global trends charts. As the investigation continued on the ground and online, people stayed hopeful for a happy ending despite the dim odds: searches for “mh370 found” outnumbered searches for “mh370 lost.”

Here’s the full list of our top 10 global trending searches:

Play-Doh has landed in hot water with parents after releasing a plastic toy that looks suspiciously like a sex toy.

The item in question: an "extruder" tool included in Play-Doh's $20 Sweet Shoppe Cake Mountain Playset. Some parents are complaining that the device, intended for squeezing out icing onto a toy cake, resembles a penis

And it's a little hard to argue with that:

I just died. makers of Play-Doh, is super sorry about selling dildos to children:http://t.co/69zsXOG3DQ pic.twitter.com/7HyYcF7rnG"

— Jenee Andreacola (@likeidreamof28) December 31, 2014

Play-Doh was scrambling to delete a flood of images of the phallic object posted to its Facebook page by parents, Uproxx reported Tuesday. According to the site, the extruder has been garnering complaints since November — but the outrage gained more traction after Christmas, when many kids unwrapped boxes containing the dildo-shaped object.

Many thought that the rivalry between SA rappers AKA and Cassper Nyovest was just a PR stunt but the past weekend’s events have proved the opposite.

Musician, Cassper Nyovest, Real name, Refiloe Phoolo has opened a case against one of AKA’s entourage members after a gun was pulled on him, Friday night.

The incident allegedly took place on the 15th August 2014 at SABC 1’s Live Amp studios where both artists had been invited to perform.

“The incident involved one of AKA’s entourage members’, known as Prince Nyembe, threatening Cassper Nyovest with a firearm and AKA assaulting Cassper’s Road Manager, Tshepo Seone better known as ‘Spike’,” Cassper’s PR company, African Star Communications, said in a press release.

“I feel this incident was unnecessary and was a sad day for the entertainment industry in South Africa. I chose not to retaliate as I have lived the life of gangster violence before and walked away from it to pursue my music career,” he was quoted saying.

“As I am a public figure now what message would I be sending out to the people that support me. Therefore I will take the correct procedures to deal with the matter.”

The buzzing rap act is currently being held on a $2m bail which his record label has agreed to pay.

American rapper Bobby Shmurda, the mastermind behind the breakout single 'Hot Nigga;, and the viral dance move known as the 'Shmoney Dance' has plead not guilty to drug trafficking and murder charges.

The 20 year old rapper was arrested last week after police operatives identified him as the head of a dangerous street gang based in New York City.

Other members of his crew known as GS9 were also arrested. During the arrest, police officers seized 21 guns from the suspects. 10 out of these 21 guns were obtained on the same day.

Bobby Shmurda's attorney Howard Greenberg has denied his client's involvement in these charges.

"Does it make sense that he would resort to committing crimes when he has the world in the palm of his hand? It's ridiculous. He is a legitimate entertainer. He is rich. He is busy. He is always on tour" said Howard Greenberg to AP.

The rapper is now being held on a $2m bail, which his record label Epic Records have reportedly agreed to pay.

The stabbing death of a man whose na ked body was found outside a Brooklyn apartment building was the result of a sordid love triangle that ended in two killings, not one — and the arrest of a suspect Thursday.
Jerome Barrett, 35, of East New York is believed to have been having s ex with a co-worker in a parked car when the woman’s husband interrupted them early Wednesday, police sources said.
The husband, Steve Whittingham, 48, stabbed Barrett several times in the chest and did the same to his wife, Jonelle Barker, 36, killing both of them.

Barrett, who also was married, was wounded but managed to flee, clutching his clothing and wallet, the sources said. He made his way to the entrance of an apartment building on Louisiana Ave. near Seaview Ave. in Spring Creek Towers shortly after 1 a.m. Wednesday, the sources said.
He was ringing the buzzer at the main entrance, trying to get help, when he was overcome, the sources said. His clothes and wallet were found a few feet from his body, just outside the building’s entrance.
A day later, about 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Barrett’s car, a Kia, was found parked on New Lots Ave. in Brownsville, the sources said. Inside the trunk was Jonelle Barker’s body. She, too, was naked, the sources said. Investigators believe Barrett and Barker, who were baggage handlers at JFK Airport, were having an affair and that Whittingham killed them in a rage after learning about the infidelity and catching them.

Jerome Barrett’s brother, Benjamin Barrett Jr., who lives in Virginia, was stunned when he heard his sibling had been slain.
“No! … You’re kidding, man!” he said, adding that their father had died of cancer just last week. “He was just coming back down here this weekend for the funeral.”
Whittingham surrendered to authorities hours before Barker’s body was discovered, the sources said. He was charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of first-degree murder, which could get him life without parole if convicted.

Neighbors had only good things to say about the dreadlocked Whittingham. They said he works in a garage, is a family man and was just seen buying doughnuts for his kids. Barrett’s sister-in-law said neither she nor her husband knew Barrett was having an affair. “He always seemed to be family-oriented,” Michelle Wilson-Barrett said. “He had a heart made of gold.
“It’s shocking to me,” she added. “I didn’t know that side of him.”
She also raged at Whittingham.
“He could have hit him in the head with a bat or just beat him up,” she said.
I think he should pay for this.”

Cristiano Ronaldo's career was always going to be immortalised in a statue sooner or later, and an image of the striker has now been sculpted on the Portuguese island of Madeira, where he grew up.

"Say you're scared!" When people go whale watching, they tend to be disappointed, so much that the hobby should probably just be called boat sitting. But back in 1820, a whaling ship had no trouble finding the giant sea mammals. In fact, they found one that they simply could not escape. In the Heart of the Sea is the tale of Moby Dick, and the encounter the Essex had with the massive sperm whale at sea. Chris Hemsworth leads his crew with unfathomable courage as the crew is forced to drift for more than ninety days in three tiny whaleboats, succumbing to weather, hunger, disease, and the monster himself.Watch it!

Here's the new trailer for Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea, originally from Apple:

You can still watch the first trailer for In the Heart of the Sea right here.

Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. In the Heart of the Sea is directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ron Howard, of many great films including Cocoon, Willow, Backdraft, Apollo 13, Rnasom, A Beautiful Mind, Cinderella Man, The Da Vinci Code, Frost/Nixon, Angels & Demons, Rush throughout his career. Based on the book of the same name by Nathaniel Philbrick, with a screenplay by Charles Leavitt (and many others). Warner Bros. Pictures will release In the Heart of the Sea in theaters everywhere on March 13th, 2015.

Sunday

Combating the full leak of her then-unannounced album Rebel Heart this past Wednesday, Madonna has decided to officially release the first six tracks from her latest album "Rebel Heart", including the Nicki Minaj collaboration "Bitch I'm Madonna." But that is not the song I'm currently obsessing over in this sextet.

Even if you don't want to purchase or stream, it's worth your time to enjoy iTunes's minute-long preview of our new favorite dance track about conspiracy theories, "Illuminati," where Madonna slides between singing and rapping about accused illuminati luminaries like Jay Z, Beyonce, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, and... did she just say "the Google of United States"?

I can't vouch these are 100 percent the right lyrics... but it's awfully close.

It's not Jay Z and Beyoncé
It's not Nicki or Lil Wayne
It's not Oprah and Obama
The Pope and Rihanna
Queen Elizabeth or Kanye

It's not pentagrams or witchcraft
It's not triangles or stacks of cash
Black magic or Gaga, Gucci or Prada
Riding on the golden calf

The all-seeing eye is watching tonight
That's what it is tonight, truth and the light
The all-seeing eye is watching tonight
Nothing to hide, secrets inside
It's like everybody in this party, shining like illuminati
It's like everybody in this party, shining like illuminati

It's the enlightenment that started it all
The founding fathers wrote it down on the wall
And now the media's misleading us all
To right and to wrong
It's time to dance and turn this dark into something
So let the fire burn, this music is bumping
We're gonna live forever, love never dies
It starts tonight

Behind the curtain of the new world order
It's not platinum-encrypted corners
It's not Isis or the phoenix,
The pyramids of Egypt
Don't make it into something sordid
It's not Steve Jobs or Bill Gates
It's not the Google of United States
It's not Bieber or LeBron, Clinton or Bond
or anyone you love to hate

Nicki Minaj (and her bum — thanks to her meme-worthy single cover for "Anaconda") is having a really great year. Aside from just releasing her album "The Pinkprint," she has another impressive milestone to add to her 2014 resume: Italian fashion house Roberto Cavalli has just unveiled its spring 2015 ad campaign, which stars the rapper in a series of colorful, tribal-inspired images, shot by Francesco Carrozzini.

It makes sense that Minaj has just now nabbed her first high fashion campaign: Earlier this year, she made an effort to dial down her eccentric style, retiring her technicolor wigs and out-there ensembles. Plus, we love that she's showing off her very famous curves in the shots, which is partially why Cavalli chose her as a face of the brand in the first place. "In recent years we have become accustomed to women castigated in clothes that hide their body shapes," the designer said in a press release. "With this campaign, I wanted to send a strong countertrend message. I wanted a sensual woman who is aware of her body, who is not afraid to show her curves, rather she make them as a strength." Although, it seems worth mentioning that her already unreal proportions do seem to be enhanced by excessive Photoshop.

Also, a fun fact: a snake is one of the symbols of the house of Cavalli. We'll let you insert your own "Anaconda" pun here. see the full campaign below.

Looks like 2014 was the year of the data scientist, judging by LinkedIn’s "25 Hottest Professional Skills of 2014" report.

The social network people use to impress their peers and future bosses, LinkedIn knows very well what skills recruiters search for on its site and which particular talents get people hired. So it analyzed the data in more than 330 million member profiles to figure out which skill was the most in-demand.

Globally, the winner is—drumroll, please—statistical analysis and data mining.

That makes perfect sense, if you take into account the other big trends this year and the intense load of data they’ll accumulate about us.
Data, Data Everywhere—But What Does It Mean?

This year, several emerging technologies got their sea legs.

Smart homes got some juice, thanks to acquisitions by Samsung and Google, and Apple’s splashy HomeKit announcement. Wearable devices, and their continually evolving health and fitness tracking features, also leapt to the foreground this year. Meanwhile, TV streaming officially graduated from geek hobby to a mainstream obsession—so much so that the TV tracking experts at Nielsen decided to monitor online television viewing too.

That’s just for starters. All of these innovations and more will lead to a new high in data aggregation, the likes of which we have not seen before. And someone has to make sense of it all. So companies have been vying for the folks who can do just that. Big, sexy articles by the likes of Forbes, Harvard and Time magazine probably helped the cause, ratcheting up the profile and appeal of occupations that, until now, remained largely behind the scenes.

Of course, that’s not the only area to ponder.
LinkedIn also singled out 24 other "hot" skills in its list.

The 25 Hottest Professional Skills Of 2014

  1. Statistical Analysis and Data Mining
  2. Middleware and Integration Software
  3. Storage Systems and Management
  4. Network and Information Security
  5. SEO/SEM Marketing
  6. Business Intelligence
  7. Mobile Development
  8. Web Architecture and Development Framework
  9. Algorithm Design
  10. Perl/Python/Ruby
  11. Data Engineering and Data Warehousing
  12. Marketing Campaign Management
  13. Mac, Linux and Unix Systems
  14. User Interface Design
  15. Recruiting
  16. Digital and Online Marketing
  17. Computer Graphics and Animation
  18. Economics
  19. Java Development
  20. Channel Marketing
  21. SAP ERP Systems
  22. Integrated Circuit (IC) Design
  23. Shell Scripting Languages
  24. Game Development
  25. Virtualization

My, how times change. Last year, LinkedIn reported that the top skill in 2013 was social media marketing, followed by mobile development. Now, last year's winner doesn’t even appear on the chart, and mobile development fell to #7.

Also, take note, developers: While programming skills remain important to employers, the Perl, Python and Ruby coding languages took a tumble, from #4 to #10 now.
But The U.S. Has Its Head In The Clouds

The LinkedIn report also offers a country-by-country breakdown of its report. Notably, statistical analysis and data mining came in second on the U.S. list, beat out by cloud and distributed computing.

Other trends LinkedIn spotted:
Recruiters are in demand globally. Recruiting was in the top 20 across most of the countries we examined. In Brazil, it even came up as the 2nd hottest skill....
STEM specialties dominate hiring priorities. It’s hard not to notice that most of the skills that made the list are related to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)....
Marketing is back in vogue. Interestingly, another quite popular profession on the list is marketing. The focus this year was on SEO/SEM specialists, campaign managers and digital marketers....

Consider this a capsule view on the recruitment year that was, and a preview of what employers will clamor for as the new year arrives.

Rapper Akon lost more than half his followers in what has been dubbed the "Instagram rapture"

Photo-sharing app Instagram has removed millions of accounts believed to be posting spam, angering many legitimate users.

People who lost a lot of followers criticised the action, dubbing it the "Instagram Rapture".

Like its parent company Facebook, Instagram routinely removes accounts to limit spam and prevent users buying followers to appear more popular.

Rapper Akon reportedly lost 56% of his followers in the cull.

Figures collated by developer Zach Allia - not affiliated to Instagram - totted up the impact of the purge on the site's top 100 accounts.

The big losers were Justin Bieber (minus 3,538,228 followers), and an online marketing specialist called Wellington Campos, which lost 3,284,304 followers overnight.

One account, chiragchirag78, lost 99% of his followers - 3,660,460 - before he himself was deleted.

Instagram's own account on the site lost 18,880,211 followers overnight.

'Omg'

Instagram had warned its users that the deletion was coming in a blog post earlier this month.

"We've been deactivating spammy accounts from Instagram on an ongoing basis to improve your experience," wrote chief executive and founder Kevin Systrom.

"As part of this effort, we will be deleting these accounts forever, so they will no longer be included in follower counts. This means that some of you will see a change in your follower count."

Matt McGorry, star of Orange is the New Black, joked about the deletions

Reacting to the purge, many of the site's users directed harsh words at Instagram - while others saw the lighter side.

Rapper Ma$e, who lost more than a million followers, deleted his account after he was accused of paying for more followers, while video blogger Jamie Curry tweeted: "I lost 30k followers on instagram omg."

Matt McGorry, an actor who has starred in prison drama Orange is the New Black, wrote: "There may be 545k Instagram followers left but my 11k spam followers that disappeared took a piece of my heart with them.

"I'll honour the memory of each of my 11k spam Instagram followers that I lost with the lighting of candles. Well, one candle. I only have one."

Kim Kardashian won't let anything get in the way of a good selfie.

The reality star unceremoniously cropped her daughter North out of a Instagram picture over the weekend and took to Twitter on Monday to explain why.

The 34-year-old reality star was baffled by all the fuss the picture caused online, and said that while it was an unflattering frame of her daughter, she loved her own look.

She tweeted: 'Wait, is this really news that I posted a selfie and cropped my daughter out? LOL.'

She added: 'Her eyes were closed and I was feeling my look! Can I live?!?!'

What about Nori?! Kim posted this picture of herself and her daughter (...who was cropped out by Kim)

On the defensive: Kim took to Twitter to explain why her adorable baby was cut out of her selfie

Kim shared a series of shots of North and her pals on Sunday, before posting another shot with an emoji of a smiley face giving a kiss, next to a picture where North was cropped out from.

The pair were out and about at the Disney On Ice - Let's Celebrate show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Kim's other picture revealed they were joined by North's cousins Penelope, two, and Mason, five.

Who she CAN make room for: Later that day, Kim posted a picture of herself and BFF Brittney Gastineau enjoying a night out
